- Description: ZHU's new BLACKLIZT.DC festival lands in Washington this December with 11 artists, three stages, and a warehouse-party ethos — a deliberate counterpoint to "mainstream and high-production" events, landing the same week EDC Orlando opens its 15th year with 40-plus debuts.

**ZHU just announced he's throwing his own festival, and he built it to be the opposite of the ones he's spent a decade headlining.** BLACKLIZT.DC lands December 18–19 at BERHTA, an indoor-outdoor art space in Washington, DC — 11 artists, three stages, a strict music-first, warehouse-party vibe. He says it's a direct counterpoint to "mainstream and high-production events." The same week, EDC Orlando opens its 15th anniversary edition with 40-plus artist debuts and Insomniac's first East Coast Hotel EDC. Two totally different bets on what dance music fans actually want right now.

## The mainstream side is still scaling up

EDC Orlando isn't shrinking — it's expanding. A four-day footprint with pre- and after-parties, a lineup stacked with Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Alesso and Hardwell, and a hotel takeover built specifically to keep the party going after the gates close. **Insomniac's answer to festival fatigue is more festival, not less.** It's worked for fifteen years running, and there's no sign the formula is tired yet.

## ZHU's answer is the opposite bet

BLACKLIZT.DC is small on purpose. Eleven artists — DANSYN, Fahlberg, HNTR, Joezi, KamJam, Kotiēr, Nico De Andrea, Parellelle, RICHE and TOBEHONEST — across three stages in one indoor-outdoor space, inspired by ZHU's own *BLACK MIDAS* album. **No mainstage spectacle, no forty artists competing for the same headline slot.** If it works, he says he'll move the whole thing to a different city every year, treating it more like a traveling warehouse party than a festival brand chasing bigger numbers each edition.

## Why an A-lister is betting on small

- **Headliner fatigue is real** — when you've played every mainstage in the world, a room that holds a few thousand people starts to look like the interesting problem.
- **The underground never actually left** — it just got harder to see next to festivals with eight-figure production budgets.
- **A traveling, city-hopping festival is a different business model entirely** — closer to a residency than a franchise, and ZHU is testing whether that scales at all.

## Both can be right

**Dance music isn't choosing one lane — it's building both at the same time, in the same week.** EDC proves there's still an enormous audience for spectacle at scale. BLACKLIZT.DC is a bet that an A-list name can pull a crowd back toward something smaller and rougher around the edges. Neither one needs the other to fail. The interesting part is that an artist with ZHU's reach felt the pull to build the small room instead of just booking the big one.
